Lawrence Bourne III, a compulsive gambler facing mounting debts, finds an unexpected way to escape his creditors – joining the Peace Corps. Assigned to a rural Thai village, he joins forces with Tom Tuttle, an idealistic WSU graduate, and Beth Wexler, a down-to-earth yet captivating local liaison, to build a bridge for the village's wellbeing. Unbeknownst to them, their seemingly altruistic endeavor has attracted the attention of dangerous players: the U.S. Army, a local Communist group, and a notorious drug lord, all seeking control over the strategic location. As tensions mount and allegiances shift, Lawrence, Tom, and Beth must rely on their resourcefulness, supported by At Toon – the village's only English-speaking native – to navigate the precarious situation. Alongside their own struggles, they are forced to question what is best for themselves and the villagers in this intricate web of power and interest.
