Description:
In this endearing film, we follow Dondup, a young government official with a penchant for American culture, as he embarks on an unexpected journey through the breathtaking yet isolated landscapes of Bhutan. His longing to leave his tranquil village stems from his fascination with all things denim and his desire to secure a visa that will allow him to finally reach the land he admires so much, America. However, when Dondup misses the only bus out of town bound for Thimphu, he is left with no choice but to hitchhike and walk along the Lateral Road towards the west. Along this unplanned adventure, he befriends an ensemble of colorful characters: an apple seller, a contemplative Buddhist monk with his intricately designed dragon-headed dramyin, a tipsy individual, a resilient widow crafting rice paper, and her alluring daughter, Sonam.Throughout their journey together, these unlikely companions share moments of humor, poignancy, and self-discovery as they navigate the rugged terrain of the western Bhutanese countryside. The film subtly explores themes of cultural identity, personal growth, and the allure of escaping one's roots in search of a brighter future. It offers viewers a unique window into the rich tapestry of life in rural Bhutan while inviting us to contemplate our own desires for connection and belonging.
