In the lush, sun-drenched landscape of southern France during the reign of King Francis I, a quiet village named Artigat is home to newlyweds Martin Guerre and Bertrande de Rols. Life seems idyllic until Martin mysteriously vanishes after being accused of theft. Years go by, and an individual claiming to be Martin reappears in the village.
