In the lush, sun-drenched landscape of southern France during the reign of King Francis I, a quiet village named Artigat is home to newlyweds Martin Guerre and Bertrande de Rols. Life seems idyllic until Martin mysteriously vanishes after being accused of theft. Years go by, and an individual claiming to be Martin reappears in the village. The Guerre family embraces him, but Bertrande begins to sense that something is amiss with this supposedly returned husband. Suspicion and doubt permeate the once-peaceful community as they grapple with the question of whether Martin is truly back or if his replacement has ulterior motives in their midst.
