The Last Time We Were Kids

In a summer of 1943 Rome, four resilient children, despite the chaotic backdrop of war raging around them, find solace in playing war games together. Italo comes from affluence, Cosimo has an incarcerated father driven by primal desires, Vanda is an orphan who clings to her faith, and Riccardo hails from a wealthy Jewish family. Their backgrounds are diverse but their bond remains undeterred by the historical turmoil that plagues Europe.As friends, they remain steadfast in what they call "the greatest friendship in the world." However, on October 16th, their innocence is shattered when Riccardo is taken away by the Germans alongside over a thousand others from the ghetto. Through Italo's father's position, Federale, the group believes they have located Riccardo and, committed to their "spit pact," they embark on a secret mission to convince the German forces to release him.In this desperate quest, these children traverse an Italy worn by war - encountering disbanded soldiers, deserters, exhausted populations, and occupying German troops. The journey tests their friendship, their courage, and ultimately exposes them to harsh realities far beyond the scope of their childhood games.
