In his final year, Franz Kafka, a renowned writer plagued by tuberculosis and an overbearing family, discovers the profound joy of intimacy. In the summer of 1923, he encounters Dora Diamant in the seaside resort Graal-Müritz on the Baltic Sea coast. She is a young, grounded woman from the East working at a Jewish Volksheim; he is an experienced world traveler with a penchant for writing. Though their backgrounds and abilities differ greatly – she dances while he writes, she embraces the present while he ponders the conjunctions of life – Dora accepts Franz as he is, and he reciprocates this acceptance. This unlikely pair embarks on an extraordinary journey together, experiencing the fullness of life in their allotted year, exploring Berlin before ultimately seeking treatment for Franz's rapidly deteriorating health at a sanatorium in Austria. Despite the inevitability of his looming decline, their brief but transformative time together reveals the power and beauty of love and connection.
