Val Xavier, a character shrouded in mystery and obscurity, wanders into a remote town where he takes up employment at a quaint general store owned by the enigmatic Lady Torrence. As Val attempts to adapt to his new surroundings, he finds himself pursued by Carol Cutere, an intriguing local who balances a duality of being both a tramp and a member of one of the town's most esteemed families.
