During World War II in Belgium's Ardennes region, a young Jewish girl named Misha seeks refuge with her Russian mother Gerusha and German father Reuven amidst the chaos of war. With her parents eventually captured by the Nazis, Misha is taken in by a German family who mistreat her. She finds solace, however, through her connection with Ernest's family - particularly his affectionate dogs and her bond with Ernest himself. Gifted a compass, she learns that her mother and father have been sent to work in forced labor camps in the east.When Misha's temporary family is arrested by the Germans for sheltering her, she embarks on a perilous journey through the woods towards the east. In search of her parents, she relies on her wit, resilience, and the lessons imparted upon her by both her mother and her surrogate caregivers. Along the way, Misha encounters a variety of characters - some benevolent and others malicious - each offering their own insights into the complexities of love, loyalty, and survival in a time of unimaginable darkness.
