In 1993, Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire, a Canadian military leader, found himself appointed by the United Nations to oversee the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR). This mission aimed to enforce the ceasefire in the region, but it was riddled with challenges: severely underfunded, bogged down in bureaucracy, and comprising military units from more than forty different countries, each following their own distinct program. As Dallaire grappled with these obstacles, he faced a daunting task - trying to halt the catastrophic events unfolding around him as the Rwandan Genocide spiraled out of control. Despite his relentless efforts and unwavering determination, Dallaire's pleas for reinforcements and action were met with cold indifference from those above him in rank, leaving the devastating consequences to play out amidst a harrowing landscape of violence and despair.
