In Paris of the 1930s, Paul has known only life within the confined walls of an orphanage. His world changes drastically when he is adopted by Célestine, a joyful country woman, and her husband Borel, a gamekeeper overseeing a vast estate in Sologne. As a city child unused to nature's whims, Paul initially struggles with adapting to his new surroundings - the mysterious, wild region that encompasses towering forests, misty ponds, sprawling heaths, and endless fields. These lands are owned by the taciturn Count de la Fresnaye, a solitary man residing in his manor amidst this sovereign domain. Paul's journey of self-discovery intertwines with the allure and challenges of a world far removed from the life he once knew within the orphanage walls.
