In the picturesque surroundings of Cape Cod, Tate Donovan, an architect from New York, seeks solace after being discharged from a psychiatric facility due to depression. Haunted by the recent death of his sister and her cryptic revelation about seeing spirits, he strives for a rational perspective on life. This changes when he checks into a historic bed-and-breakfast, where he crosses paths with Wren, an enigmatic young woman who provokes him to question his understanding of the world beyond what can be explained by reason and logic.
