Moonlighting

In "The Painted Bird", Jan Nowak, a Polish contractor, is presented with an opportunity to lead a team of workmen to London on the promise of providing them with well-paid employment under a government official. As they navigate their way through the unfamiliar environment of the Western world, Nowak must simultaneously manage the project's progress and the emotional well-being of his crew, who are overwhelmed by both the temptations of this new world and the painful separation from their families.Adding to the complexity of the situation is the fact that Nowak is the only member of the team fluent in English; he wields this power strategically within the group dynamics. However, their lives take a dramatic turn when political unrest back home culminates in a military coup, leaving Nowak to confront an unexpectedly daunting set of challenges and test his own moral compass.
