In 1930s Kyoto, Chinese student Chen Zhen finds himself caught between two worlds and cultures; he is ostracized by his Japanese peers for dating Mitsuko Yamada, whose father runs the university where they both study. However, upon returning to Shanghai in 1937 under Japanese occupation, Chen learns that Hou Ting-An, his respected kung-fu master, was killed in a duel with Japanese champion Ryuichi Akutagawa. Driven by loyalty and a desire for justice, Chen sets out to avenge the death of his mentor and navigate the treacherous landscape of wartime politics and personal rivalries. The film explores themes of cultural conflict, sacrifice, and resilience as Chen Zhen fights to protect both his love and his heritage in the face of overwhelming adversity.
