In the quaint town of Minnesota, an eccentric annual beauty pageant is the center of attention as a TV crew arrives to capture the event. The pressure is particularly high for Gladys Leeman, a former winner who eagerly pushes her daughter towards the crown, employing unconventional and even dangerous tactics such as explosions, falling lights, and trailer fires. The police, however, remain nonchalant given that the Leemans are the town's wealthiest family. Amber Atkins, a kind-hearted rival contestant, refuses to let her ambitions be hindered by the chaos and fights back with determination, adding an element of heartfelt competition to the otherwise absurd situation.
