Description:

In 12th century Andalusia, renowned Islamic philosopher Ibn Rushd navigates a tumultuous landscape shaped by political intrigue and ideological conflict, living with his wife Zeinab and their daughter Salma. Their region is ruled by Khalifa ElMansour, whose two sons embody the tension between intellect and extremism. ElNasser, an intellectual who shares Ibn Rushd's love for philosophy, is smitten with Salma. Meanwhile, Abdallah, the younger son, prefers dance and poetry, finding solace in the company of a gypsy family - including Marawan, their singer - and eventually becoming entangled in a tragic affair. As Khalifa relies on extremist forces to bolster his army's strength, these radical factions seize the opportunity to expand their influence, targeting artists and philosophers like Ibn Rushd with hostility. This perilous environment drives Abdallah into the arms of these extremists, who indoctrinate him and manipulate him into plotting the assassination of his own father.Against this backdrop of turmoil, Youssef Chahine crafts an impassioned tale about the devastating consequences of extremism. As the story unfolds with its themes of forbidden love, artistic persecution, and familial bonds tested by political unrest, the film serves as a powerful statement against the forces that seek to undermine freedom, creativity, and tolerance in society.
