The film transports us to Kansas prior to the Civil War, where newly arrived Texan Bob Seton is immediately taken by the idyllic town of Lawrence and its inhabitants. Among them is Mary McCloud, the daughter of the local banker, who catches his eye. However, a sense of unease permeates the air as the territory is divided over whether it should remain slave-free.As politics heat up, Bob finds himself competing against William Cantrell for the position of marshal in an upcoming election. Though appearing to be an upright citizen, Cantrell harbors deeply dangerous ambitions and will stop at nothing to leave his mark on the territory. When he loses the election, Cantrell forms a band of raiders, using them to smuggle weapons into the area and prey on unsuspecting settlers. Eventually, the group takes up Confederate uniforms as they continue their reign of terror. With tensions reaching a boiling point, it falls on Bob Seton and the courageous citizens of Lawrence to face off against Cantrell's raiders in a climactic showdown, defending the town's values and way of life.
