Dan Klores' film delves into a peculiar love story between Burt Pugach, a flourishing attorney in 1950s New York City, and Linda Riss, a younger woman who catches his eye. Their initial relationship comes to an abrupt end when Riss learns that Pugach's claims of pending divorce are fabricated; furthermore, she discovers her own engagement to another man. In retaliation, Pugach masterminds a horrifying act of violence: he hires men to throw lye in Riss' face, causing severe injuries and altering her appearance forever. Consequently, Pugach serves 14 years in prison for his heinous crime, but the unconventional nature of their twisted love story continues even after he is released as they somehow find themselves connected once again.
