Before the Revolution

In this poignant coming-of-age story, we follow Fabrizio as he navigates the cusp of adulthood under the watchful eye of his ten years elder aunt, Gina. Passionate and idealistic, Fabrizio is heavily influenced by Cesare, a Marxist teacher who imbues in him a sense of social responsibility. As Fabrizio becomes engaged to Clelia, an elegant but bourgeois woman, the sudden tragedy of losing his mercurial friend Agostino – possibly a suicide – shakes him to his core.Amidst this tumultuous time, Gina's complex character unfolds as she embraces Fabrizio in a whirlwind love affair after Agostino's funeral. However, Gina further complicates their relationship when she sleeps with a stranger, leaving Fabrizio both confused and heartbroken.As the story progresses, visits to Cesare – who represents one vision for Italy's future – as well as Puck, an older landowner losing his land, offer contrasting perspectives on the nation's trajectory.
