Graham Marshall, an ambitious executive on Madison Avenue, has been toiling away, balancing mounting bills with a strained marriage. He finally hopes for a well-earned promotion, only to have it snatched away by a rival in the cutthroat corporate world. Driven to extreme measures, he unintentionally kills an aggressive panhandler during a fit of rage. As Graham tries to reevaluate his priorities, he decides to take control of his life by orchestrating 'accidents' for his nagging wife and demanding boss. However, as these flawed schemes begin to unravel, a missing cigarette lighter and the persistent questions from an observant detective threaten to expose his dark secret.
