Biography:
Born on March 26, 1933, Giovanni "Tinto" Brass is an Italian film director and screenwriter who has captivated audiences for decades. In the 60s and 70s, he directed a series of avant-garde films that garnered critical acclaim across various genres.
However, it was his later work in the erotic genre that made Brass an international sensation. With films like Caligula, Così fan tutte (released under the English title All Ladies Do It), Paprika, Monella (Frivolous Lola), and Trasgredire, he established himself as a pioneer in uncharted territory for Italian cinema.
After directing Salon Kitty in 1976 and Caligula in 1979, Brass's films began to explore more risqué themes. Initially intended as a satirical take on power, Caligula was re-edited by the producers without Brass's consent. The political and comedic elements were stripped away while explicit sexual scenes were added, turning it into a pornographic drama. Displeased with this direction, Brass requested his name be removed from the credits, but he remains associated with the film - not only because it became his most widely viewed work but also due to its status as the highest-grossing Italian film in the United States.
Despite this controversy, Brass continued creating thought-provoking and visually stunning films throughout his seventies. His other notable works include The Key (1983) and Senso '45 (2002), proving that he was far from slowing down in his twilight years as a filmmaker.
