She rose to fame with her portrayal of Diane Chambers on the hit sitcom Cheers, earning five Emmy nominations and one win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1983. Additionally, she was honored with two Golden Globe Awards for her performance on the show.

Her impressive acting career includes starring roles in films such as Night Shift (1982), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), The Money Pit (1986), Outrageous Fortune (1987), Hello Again (1987), Troop Beverly Hills (1989), The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), A Very Brady Sequel (1996), and Dr. T & the Women (2000). Shelley turned down lead roles in Working Girl, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and My Stepmother Is an Alien but found success in The Money Pit and Outrageous Fortune. She also declined the role of Mary in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial due to her prior commitment to Night Shift.

In 1987, Shelley left Cheers but returned for the 200th Anniversary Special in 1990 and reprised her role as Diane during the last season (1992-1993). This brought her another Emmy nomination. She later rejoined Kelsey Grammer's spinoff series Frasier, playing Diane in several episodes and receiving an additional Emmy nod.

Shelley also ventured into comedy roles, starring as Carol Brady in the 1995 hit film The Brady Bunch Movie - a campy take on the popular television show. She reprised her role in A Very Brady Sequel (1996) and again in the 2002 television film sequel, The Brady Bunch in the White House.

More recently, Shelley had a recurring role as DeDe Pritchett - Jay Pritchett's ex-wife - on the popular ABC sitcom Modern Family. Through her captivating performances and memorable characters, Shelley Long has solidified herself as an iconic figure in the entertainment industry.
