Born on March 21, 1974, in New Zealand, Rhys Montague Darby is a multi-talented actor and comedian who began his career in entertainment after serving in the New Zealand army. In 1996, he joined forces with Grant Lobban to form the comedy duo "Rhysently Granted," which quickly gained recognition for its unique brand of humor.
Before making a name for himself on the global stage, Darby honed his comedic skills through solo stand-up routines that blended vibrant storytelling with mime and sound effects. His performances earned him two Billy T Award nominations, further cementing his status as a rising star in the world of comedy.
Darby's breakout role came in 2007 when he joined the ensemble cast of the HBO comedy series "Flight of the Conchords" as Murray Hewitt. On television, Darby has been a part of numerous series, including "Short Poppies" and "Wrecked." He's also lent his voice to animated shows like "Voltron: Legendary Defender." However, it was his role as pirate Stede Bonnet in the period romantic comedy series "Our Flag Means Death" (2022-2023) that marked a significant milestone in his career. Not only did he star as the main protagonist for the first time but also ventured into dramatic acting, which earned him critical acclaim and recognition.
In addition to his successful acting career, Darby is an accomplished author. He has written three children's books under the "Buttons McGinty" series and an autobiography titled "This Way to Spaceship." His creative pursuits don't stop there; he has also been hosting the cryptozoology podcast "The Cryptid Factor" since 2008, alongside fellow hosts Dan Schreiber, Leon 'Buttons' Kirkbeck, and previously, David Farrier.
