Biography:
Born in Birmingham, England, on December 3, 1948, John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne rose to fame as the lead singer of heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Known for his distinctive vocals and stage presence, Ozzy was affectionately given the nickname "Prince of Darkness."
In 1968, he co-founded Black Sabbath and became their frontman, providing the iconic voice that powered albums like their debut in 1970 and critically acclaimed releases Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973). Despite leaving the band in 1979 due to issues with alcohol and drugs, Ozzy's impact on heavy metal music was undeniable.
Taking a leap into a solo career, he released his first album Blizzard of Ozz in 1980, followed by 13 studio albums, seven of which achieved multi-platinum status in the US. After reuniting with Black Sabbath in 1997, they went on to record their final studio album, 13 (2013), and embarked on a farewell tour that culminated in a performance in Birmingham in 2017.
With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, including his solo work and Black Sabbath releases, Ozzy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Black Sabbath in 2006 and as a solo artist in 2024. In addition, he was honored with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Birmingham Walk of Stars.
In the early 2000s, Ozzy's career took an unexpected turn when he starred alongside his family in their reality show, The Osbournes. He also co-starred with his children Kelly and Jack in the television series Ozzy & Jack's World Detour, further showcasing his charismatic personality off-stage.
After a long and storied career, Ozzy performed his final live show at the Back to the Beginning concert event on July 5, 2025. Despite ongoing health battles, he intended to continue recording music. Unfortunately, Ozzy passed away later that month on July 22, leaving behind an enduring legacy in both music and popular culture.
