Biography:
Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair, simply known as Mohanlal, is a multifaceted talent in Indian cinema. He has made a name for himself with his versatile and natural acting performances that have captivated audiences over the years. His journey began in 1978 with an unreleased film called Thiranottam, followed by his first released movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal where he played the lead antagonist in 1980.
In the following years, Mohanlal continued to impress with his portrayal of complex characters across various genres, from comedy and action films to other dramatic roles. In 1986, he was labelled a superstar of Malayalam cinema after the immense success of Rajavinte Makan, where he brilliantly portrayed an underworld don.
Mohanlal's talents extend beyond acting as he has also ventured into film production and even acted in Tamil and Bollywood films. Some of his notable roles include his performances in Iruvar, directed by Mani Ratnam, and Company, directed by Ram Gopal Varma.
In addition to his thriving career in the film industry, Mohanlal is also an entrepreneur, owning businesses in film distribution, restaurants, and packaged spices. His accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, with the Government of India honoring him with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2001 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
Over the years, Mohanlal has won four Indian National Film Awards - two Best Actor Awards, one Special Jury Award for acting, and one Award for Best Film as a producer. He also holds six Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor. In recognition of his dedication to the Territorial Army of India, he was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2009, making him the first actor to receive such an honor. In 2010, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala awarded him an honorary doctorate.
Mohanlal's impact on Indian cinema and his home state of Kerala is undeniable. As a cultural icon in the region, he was voted as the most popular individual in a 2006 online poll conducted by CNN-IBN for Kerala's 50th anniversary celebrations.
