Biography:
Born on February 17, 1963, Michael Jeffrey Jordan is a former professional basketball player who has since transitioned into an influential businessman and majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets. Regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time by acclamation, Jordan's career had a significant impact on popularizing the NBA in the 1980s and 1990s.
Jordan's outstanding collegiate career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earned him a spot with the Chicago Bulls in 1984. Known for his prolific scoring and remarkable leaping ability, he was nicknamed "Air Jordan" and "His Airness." His defense skills were equally impressive, earning him a reputation as one of the best defensive players in basketball history.
In 1991, Michael Jordan won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, followed by back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993, forming an unbeatable "three-peat." However, he abruptly retired from basketball midway through the 1993-94 season to pursue a baseball career. He returned to the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three more championships (1996, 1997, and 1998), as well as an NBA record of 72 regular-season wins during the 1995-96 season. Jordan retired again in 1999 but made a comeback for two more NBA seasons with the Washington Wizards from 2001 to 2003.
Throughout his illustrious career, Jordan garnered numerous individual accolades, including five MVP awards, ten All-NBA First Team designations, nine All-Defensive First Team honors, fourteen NBA All-Star Game appearances, three All-Star Game MVP awards, ten scoring titles, six NBA Finals MVP awards, and the 1988 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award. He held the NBA record for highest career playoff scoring average (33.45 points per game) at the time and was named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by ESPN.
Jordan's off-court accomplishments are equally impressive, as evidenced by his role in making Nike's Air Jordan sneakers a global phenomenon. He also starred in the 1996 film Space Jam and currently serves as the majority owner and head of basketball operations for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. In 2009, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
