Biography:

Mel Brooks was born Melvin James Kaminsky on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York. He is a versatile entertainer, known for his work as an actor, comedian, filmmaker, and songwriter. With a career spanning over seven decades, Brooks has made an indelible mark in the world of comedy and entertainment.

Brooks' journey began when he started working as a comic and writer for Sid Caesar's variety show, Your Show of Shows (1950-1954). It was there that he honed his skills alongside talented writers and comedians like Neil Simon, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart, and Carl Reiner. Together with Reiner, Brooks co-created the comedy sketch The 2000 Year Old Man, which later spawned several comedy albums. Brooks received five Grammy Award nominations for Best Comedy Album before finally winning in 1999.

In collaboration with Buck Henry, Brooks created the hit satirical spy comedy series Get Smart (1965-1970) for NBC television. His talent for writing and directing comedy films came to the fore when he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Producers (1967). This was just the beginning of a string of successful comedies like The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and High Anxiety (1977).

Brooks continued to delight audiences with films such as History of the World, Part I (1981), Spaceballs (1987), Life Stinks (1991), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995). His work on Broadway included a musical adaptation of The Producers, which ran from 2001 to 2007 and earned him three Tony Awards. The show was later remade into a musical film in 2005.

In his personal life, Brooks was married to actress Anne Bancroft from 1964 until her passing in 2005. Their son, Max Brooks, followed in his parents' footsteps and became an actor and author known for his novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (2006). Mel Brooks published his memoir titled All About Me! in 2021.

Three of his films are included on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 comedy films of the past 100 years (1900-2000), with Blazing Saddles ranking at number 6, The Producers at number 11, and Young Frankenstein at number 13. This testament to his extraordinary talent and contribution to the world of comedy solidifies Mel Brooks' status as a true legend in entertainment history.
