Biography:

Born and raised in Loma Linda, California, Matthew Modine has had an extensive career as both an actor and filmmaker. His talents were first recognized at the Venice Film Festival, where he shared the Volpi Cup for Best Actor with his ensemble cast in Robert Altman's 1983 film Streamers.

This early success led to a series of lead roles throughout the 1980s, including Birdy (1984), Vision Quest (1985), and Married to the Mob (1988). However, it was his portrayal of U.S. Marine James T. "Joker" Davis in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987) that solidified Modine's position as a leading actor in Hollywood.

Over the years, Matthew has starred in numerous films such as Pacific Heights (1990), Short Cuts (1993), Cutthroat Island (1995), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and most recently, Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated Oppenheimer (2023).

In addition to his film work, Modine has also made a name for himself on the small screen. He portrayed Dr. Don Francis in the HBO film And the Band Played On (1993), Sullivan Groff on Showtime's critically acclaimed series Weeds (2007), and Ivan Turing in the drama Proof (2015). From 2016 to 2022, he played the enigmatic Dr. Martin Brenner on Netflix's hit sci-fi series Stranger Things.

Throughout his career, Modine has been recognized for his outstanding performances with two Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for And the Band Played On and What the Deaf Man Heard. Additionally, he received a special Golden Globe as part of the ensemble cast in Short Cuts, and was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for his role in And the Band Played On.
