Biography:

Born as Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez in Dayton, Ohio, Martin Sheen's journey to Hollywood stardom began with a new surname. He adopted the stage name 'Sheen' in hopes of securing more acting roles and thus started his incredible career that spans over five decades.

His first notable performances were in The Subject Was Roses (1968) and Terrence Malick's Badlands (1973), where he earned the Best Actor award at San Sebastián International Film Festival. However, it was his portrayal of Captain Benjamin Willard in Francis Ford Coppola's iconic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now (1979) that catapulted him to international fame and even landed him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor.

Sheen's on-screen versatility shines through his roles as U.S. President Josiah Bartlet in the critically acclaimed television series The West Wing (1999-2006), earning him a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards, and more recently as Robert Hanson in Netflix's Grace and Frankie (2015-2022).

Throughout his illustrious career, Sheen has had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned film directors such as Richard Attenborough, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, and David Cronenberg. In 1989, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In addition to his acting accomplishments, Sheen has directed one film, Cadence (1990), where he also appeared alongside two of his sons, Charlie and Ramón. His talent extends behind the camera as well; he has narrated, produced, and directed documentaries, earning two Daytime Emmy awards in the 1980s.
