Biography:
Born on December 21, 1937, Jane Seymour Fonda is an American actress, activist, and former fashion model whose illustrious career has spanned over six decades. The daughter of socialite Frances Ford Seymour and actor Henry Fonda, she made her acting debut in the 1960 Broadway play "There Was a Little Girl." This was followed by her screen debut later that same year with the romantic comedy "Tall Story."
As she blossomed during the 1960s, Jane starred in several popular comedies such as "Period of Adjustment" (1962), "Sunday in New York" (1963), "Cat Ballou" (1965), "Barefoot in the Park" (1967), and the iconic science fiction film "Barbarella" (1968). Her first marriage was to French director Roger Vadim, who helmed her in "Barbarella."
Fonda's acting prowess truly shone in the 1970s when she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Klute" (1971), followed by another win for "Coming Home" (1978). She was a seven-time nominee for the prestigious award, with other notable mentions including "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" (1969), "Julia" (1977), "The China Syndrome" (1979), "On Golden Pond" (1981), and "The Morning After" (1986).
The 1970s also saw Fonda's box-office draw skyrocket with hits such as "Fun with Dick and Jane" (1977), "California Suite" (1978), "The Electric Horseman" (1979), and the iconic office comedy "9 to 5" (1980). In 1984, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the TV film "The Dollmaker."
In 1982, Jane released her first exercise video, "Jane Fonda's Workout," which became the highest-selling VHS of the 20th century. This marked the beginning of a successful venture into fitness videos, with 22 such releases over the next 13 years that collectively sold over 17 million copies.
After her divorce from second husband Tom Hayden, Jane married media mogul Ted Turner in 1991 but retired from acting for some time due to a string of unsuccessful films concluded by "Stanley & Iris" (1990). Her marriage to Turner ended in 2001, and she returned to the screen with the hit film "Monster-in-Law" (2005).
The early 2010s saw Jane fully relaunch her acting career, starring in successful films such as "The Butler" (2013), "This Is Where I Leave You" (2014), "Youth" (2015), "Our Souls at Night" (2017), and "Book Club" (2018). In 2009, she returned to Broadway after a 49-year absence with the play "33 Variations," earning a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Her major recurring role in the HBO drama series "The Newsroom" (2012–14) also earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Since 2015, Jane has starred as Grace Hanson in the Netflix comedy series "Grace and Frankie," earning nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.
