Biography:
Born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, James Tolkan grew up to become a powerhouse character actor known for his intense portrayal of hard-boiled tough guy characters. With his short, bald frame, beady eyes, and gruff voice, he was often cast as rugged cops, authoritative figures, and ruthless criminals.
After attending the University of Iowa, Coe College, and Eastern Arizona College, Tolkan served a year in the United States Navy before moving to New York City to study acting under Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler at the Actors Studio. His big-screen debut came in the late 1960s with appearances in several films directed by Sidney Lumet. He played a fiercely homophobic police lieutenant in "Serpico" (1973) and a devious district attorney in "Prince of the City" (1981).
In 1985, Tolkan landed his most iconic role as Gerard Strickland, the strict and overzealous high school principal in the beloved "Back to the Future" trilogy. His memorable performances continued with roles such as Napoleon in Woody Allen's "Love and Death" (1975), a stern army officer in "WarGames" (1983), and Wesley Snipes's aggressive superior in "Boiling Point" (1993).
