Born in Los Angeles, California on December 19, 1980, Jake Gyllenhaal comes from a family deeply rooted in the film industry. Son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, he grew up with a natural affinity for the arts. His older sister Maggie Gyllenhaal is also an accomplished actress.
Jake's early acting career began when he was just a child, starting with a small role in the film City Slickers (1991). He continued to act in his father's projects, A Dangerous Woman (1993) and Homegrown (1998), honing his craft from an early age.
A turning point in Jake's career came with his roles in October Sky (1999) as Homer Hickam and Donnie Darko (2001) as a psychologically troubled teenager. These performances caught the attention of critics and audiences alike, solidifying Gyllenhaal's place in Hollywood.
