Born on November 13th, 1969 in Paisley, Scotland, Gerard James Butler is a talented actor and film producer who took an unconventional path to Hollywood. After initially studying law, he realized his true passion lay in acting, making the bold move to shift gears in the mid-'90s.
Butler began with minor roles, appearing in films like Mrs. Brown (1997), Tomorrow Never Dies (also 1997), and Tale of the Mummy (1998). In 2000, he took on a more iconic role as Count Dracula in Dracula 2000. From there, his career continued to gain momentum with roles such as Attila the Hun in the miniseries Attila (2001) and characters in Reign of Fire (2002), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), and Timeline (2003).
In 2004, Butler was cast as Erik, The Phantom, in Joel Schumacher's musical adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. This role showcased his vocal talent as well as his acting abilities. However, it wasn't until 2007 that he truly burst onto the international scene as King Leonidas in Zack Snyder's epic fantasy war film, 300.
Throughout the 2010s, Butler continued to impress audiences with his versatile acting skills. He lent his voice to the beloved How to Train Your Dragon franchise and played Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the Fallen films, starring alongside Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart. In addition, he portrayed military leader Tullus Aufidius in the 2011 film Coriolanus, directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes, and took on the role of real-life vigilante Sam Childers in Machine Gun Preacher (2011).
In more recent years, Butler has maintained his status as a leading man with action-packed roles in Geostorm (2017), Den of Thieves (2018), Greenland (2020), and the forthcoming Plane (2023).
