Biography:

Born on May 14, 1944, in Modesto, California, George Walton Lucas Jr. is an iconic figure in the world of cinema. After graduating from the University of Southern California in 1967, Lucas co-founded American Zoetrope with legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. In his early career, Lucas wrote and directed THX 1138 (1971), a film inspired by his student short Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB. Though critically acclaimed, it was a financial disappointment. His next venture, American Graffiti (1973), which drew inspiration from his own youth in Modesto during the early 1960s, proved to be both critical and commercial success, earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

In 1977, Lucas shocked the world with his space opera Star Wars. Despite a challenging production process, it quickly became a global phenomenon and the highest-grossing film of its time, winning six Oscars. Lucas went on to produce and co-write the sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).

In collaboration with Steven Spielberg, Lucas created, produced, and co-wrote the Indiana Jones franchise, beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. This partnership resulted in a series of blockbuster films that have captivated audiences for decades.

Lucas's involvement in filmmaking extended beyond his most famous franchises. He produced and wrote various films and television series through Lucasfilm between the 1970s and the 2010s, including the CGI-animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008–2014, 2020). In 1997, he revisited the Star Wars trilogy with a special edition featuring enhancements and released updated home media versions in 2004 and 2011. Lucas returned to directing with the prequel trilogy: The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005).

A true pioneer in the world of cinema, Lucas is one of history's most financially successful filmmakers and has been nominated for four Academy Awards. His films consistently rank among the 100 highest-grossing movies at the North American box office, adjusted for ticket prices. As a driving force behind some of the most beloved franchises in cinema history, Lucas is considered a significant figure of the 20th-century New Hollywood movement.
