Ernest Borgnine, born Ermes Effron Borgnino in Hamden, Connecticut, was a legendary American actor known for his distinctive gruff voice and endearing gap-toothed grin. Spanning over six decades, Borgnine's acting career left an indelible mark on the entertainment world. His charisma extended beyond the screen, making appearances on numerous talk shows as well as participating in game show panels.
Borgnine's cinematic journey began in 1951 with supporting roles in films like "China Corsair," "From Here to Eternity," "Vera Cruz," and "Bad Day at Black Rock." However, his breakthrough role came in 1955 when he starred as the lead in "Marty," for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. This was followed by a successful stint on the TV sitcom "McHale's Navy" (1962-1966), where he portrayed the lovable yet commanding title character, Captain Binghamton.
In addition to these milestones, Borgnine co-starred as Dominic Santini in the action series "Airwolf" (1984-1986) and continued to take on a wide variety of roles throughout his career. At age 92, he earned his third Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his work on the 2009 series finale of "ER."
Borgnine's voice acting prowess extended into animation as well. He became the original voice of Mermaid Man in the popular series "SpongeBob SquarePants" from 1999 until his passing in 2012. Earlier in his career, he replaced the late Vic Tayback as the voice of the villainous Carface Caruthers in both "All Dogs Go to Heaven 2" (1996) and the TV series "All Dogs Go to Heaven: The Series" (1996-1998).
