Biography:
Born on February 17th, 1991, Edward Christopher Sheeran is a multi-talented English singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and actor. Known to the world as simply "Ed Sheeran," he began his journey in music by attending the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford at the tender age of 18 in 2009.
Eager to share his talent with the world, Ed independently released an extended play titled 'No. 5 Collaborations Project' in early 2011. Following this release, he signed with Asylum Records and made a significant breakthrough with his debut album, '+' (pronounced "plus"), which was released in September 2011. This record not only topped the charts in the UK and Australia but also reached number five in the US, eventually earning an impressive eight-times platinum certification in the UK.
The single "The A Team" from this album earned Sheeran the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. In 2012, Ed's success continued as he was awarded Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. He even had the honor of performing "The A Team" with none other than musical legend Elton John at the 2013 Grammy Awards, where the single was nominated for Song of the Year.
In June 2014, Ed released his second studio album, 'x' (pronounced "multiply"), which reached number one in both the UK and US charts. It was also named the second-best-selling album worldwide in 2015. In 2015, 'x' won the Brit Award for Album of the Year, and Ed received the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.
The following year, Sheeran was awarded two Grammy Awards at the 2016 ceremony: Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, both for his single "Thinking Out Loud" from 'x.'
Ed's third album, '÷' (pronounced "divide"), released in March 2017, debuted at number one in the UK, the US, and other major markets. It was also the best-selling album worldwide of 2017. The first two singles from this album, "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill," were released in January 2017 and broke records in various countries, including debuting in the top two positions of the charts. Sheeran made history as the first artist to have two songs debut in the US top 10 in the same week. By March 2017, Ed had accumulated ten top 10 singles from '÷' on the UK Singles Chart, breaking the record for most top 10 UK singles from one album. His fourth single from '÷,' "Perfect," reached number one in the US, Australia, and the UK, where it became the Christmas number one in 2017.
Ed's fourth studio album, 'No.6 Collaborations Project,' was released in 2019 and debuted atop both the UK and US charts. Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling music artists. Two of his albums are among the top 40 best-selling albums in UK chart history: 'x' at number 20 and '÷' at number 34.
In addition to his music career, Ed has also dabbled in acting. He was a recurring actor on the TV show "The Bastard Executioner" and appeared in the Richard Curtis/Danny Boyle film "Yesterday" in 2019. With such an impressive array of accomplishments already under his belt, there is no doubt that Ed Sheeran's future will continue to shine brightly both on stage and screen.
