Biography:

Donnie Yen Chi-tan is a multifaceted Hong Kong actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and action director. Born in Guangdong, China, he discovered his passion for martial arts at a young age, delving into various styles such as tai chi and traditional Chinese martial arts. By 18 years old, the budding talent auditioned for renowned action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping in Hong Kong, leading to his first starring role in the 1984 film Drunken Tai Chi.

Donnie Yen's breakthrough came in 1992 with his portrayal of General Nap-lan in Once Upon a Time in China II opposite Jet Li's character. He went on to feature in other popular Hong Kong kung fu films, such as Iron Monkey (1993) and Wing Chun (1994). In 1997, Yen showcased his directorial skills with the release of his film Legend of the Wolf.

Expanding his horizons, Yen made his American debut in Highlander: Endgame (2000), followed by a cameo in Blade II (2002). He continued to impress audiences with roles in films like Shanghai Knights (2003), Rogue One (2016), XXX: Return of Xander Cage (2017), Mulan (2020), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

In Hong Kong cinema, Yen has appeared in a string of critically acclaimed films, including Hero (2002), SPL: Sha Po Lang (2005), 14 Blades (2010), Wu Xia (2011), Kung Fu Jungle (2014), Chasing the Dragon (2017), Enter the Fat Dragon (2020), Raging Fire (2021), and The Prosecutor (2024). In addition to acting, Yen portrayed Chen Zhen in the television series Fist of Fury (1995) and reprised the role in the 2010 film Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen.

Yen's portrayal of Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man in the Ip Man film series (2008-2019) has earned him widespread acclaim and credit for popularizing Wing Chun in China. Known not only for his mastery of kung fu but also mixed martial arts (MMA) elements, Yen's unique action choreography sets him apart from other actors in the industry.

Beyond acting, in 1997, Yen established his own production company, Bullet Films, which has contributed to the action sequences of Western blockbusters such as Blade II (2002) and Stormbreaker (2006).
