Biography:
Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins CBE was born in Wales on December 31, 1937. This esteemed actor has accumulated an impressive array of awards throughout his illustrious career, including two Academy Awards and four British Academy Film Awards. His immense talent led to a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1993, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the arts. In 2003, Hollywood honored him with a star on the Walk of Fame.
Hopkins initially honed his craft at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama before attending the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Catching the eye of iconic actor Laurence Olivier, he was invited to join the Royal National Theatre in 1965. During this period, Hopkins appeared in various productions including a personal favorite, King Lear by William Shakespeare.
Transitioning to film in 1968, Hopkins' breakout role came as Richard the Lionheart in The Lion in Winter. Recognized by director Richard Attenborough as "the greatest actor of his generation," he went on to portray the iconic Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), winning an Academy Award for Best Actor in the process.
A versatile actor, Hopkins has appeared in numerous other unforgettable films such as The Elephant Man (1980), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), Howards End (1992), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Shadowlands (1993), Legends of the Fall (1994), Meet Joe Black (1998), The Mask of Zorro (1998), Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), and Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
In addition to his film success, Hopkins has continued to excel on television. He received a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 1973 for his performance in War and Peace and starred in BBC films like The Dresser (2015) alongside Ian McKellen and King Lear (2018) opposite Emma Thompson. Hopkins also appeared in the HBO series Westworld from 2016 to 2018, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his role.
In 2020, at the age of 82, Anthony Hopkins won his fourth BAFTA Award and his second Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of an elderly man with dementia in The Father, making him the oldest Best Actor Oscar winner to date.
