Biography:
Alan Rickman, born in London on February 21, 1946, was a celebrated English actor and director with a distinctive deep voice that captivated audiences worldwide. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he became a member of the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), performing in modern and classic theatre productions. His talent was first showcased when he played Vicomte de Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses on stage, later transferring to the West End and Broadway, earning him a Tony Award nomination.
Rickman's film career took off with his breakthrough role as German terrorist leader Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988). He went on to portray a range of memorable characters such as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, for which he received a BAFTA Award, Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, Eamon DeValera in Michael Collins, Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest, Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series, Harry in Love Actually, Marvin the Paranoid Android in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Television audiences were also drawn to Rickman's talent, with his debut performance as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1978) followed by a breakthrough role in BBC's The Barchester Chronicles (1982). He later starred in television films, earning accolades for his portrayal of Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny (1996), winning a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Sadly, Alan Rickman passed away on January 14, 2016, at the age of 69 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His final performances were as Lieutenant General Frank Benson in Eye in the Sky (2015) and reprising his role as the voice of the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland (2010) in Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).
