In the wild west of 1870, recent dental school graduate Jesse W. Haywood (Don Knotts) ventures beyond Philadelphia to embark on a new career as a frontier dentist. Along this journey, he unexpectedly crosses paths with Penelope "Bad Penny" Cushing (Barbara Rhoades), a cunning woman offered a pardon in exchange for her role in tracking down an elusive gun smuggling ring. In a bid to help her cause, Penelope convinces Jesse to enter into a sham marriage as a disguise, thus allowing her greater freedom to carry out her mission.As their lives become entangled amidst the lawlessness of the frontier, Jesse and Penelope find themselves inadvertently embroiled in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with some of the west's most notorious criminals. In one fateful encounter, the gentle dentist finds himself face to face with "Arnold the Kid" (a member of this nefarious gang), leading to an unexpected outcome as Jesse inadvertently becomes known throughout the wild west as "Doc the Haywood," a legendary figure in his own right.The film captures this unique and unlikely partnership, combining elements of romance, adventure, and comedy against the backdrop of the wild frontier.
