David Shayne, a young playwright, secures funding from gangster Nick Valenti for his latest play. As fate would have it, the notorious crime boss' girlfriend Olive takes on the role of a psychiatrist in the production. Despite her lack of acting experience and intellect, Olive lands the part with ease, much to David's dismay. As the play progresses, David must navigate the whirlwind of characters he encounters: a compulsive eater as his leading man, an overbearing grand dame desperate for her part to be jazzed up, and Olive's ever-present hitman/bodyguard. Tensions run high as David grapples with the reality of his production and the question of whether his devotion to artistic integrity should outweigh the chaos surrounding him.Throughout the film, themes of art versus life, ambition in the face of adversity, and the blurred lines between professionalism and personal relationships are explored. This comedic tale offers a witty commentary on the world of theatre and the challenges one might face when success arrives through unconventional means.
