The story revolves around Li, a talented young boy from a rural Chinese village who is discovered by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and whisked away to study ballet in Beijing. This opportunity sets him on an extraordinary path that eventually leads him to Texas, where he encounters an American woman and falls deeply in love. After two years of struggle and determination, Li successfully defects from China, embarking on a new life as a principal dancer with the prestigious Houston Ballet company and later becoming a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.
